Thankyou for your NZ insights into the Neenish tart. I cant believe a baker would fill them with fruit cake mixture!!! pink and white icing seems to be the most popular colour combo in Queensland. The Old Foodiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00766403052971301718noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24170237.post-33959603887350658902012-09-13T06:43:40.409+10:002012-09-13T06:43:40.409+10:00Hi Sid - I think we just proved that there is noth...Hi Sid - I think we just proved that there is nothing really new under the sun, and that all recipes are adapted or built on previous recipes. I must now look into mazarin tarts. lets us know how your Neenish turn out, please! The Old Foodiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00766403052971301718noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24170237.post-31115761150880017242012-09-13T06:41:49.560+10:002012-09-13T06:41:49.560+10:00hi Foose! Only the filling was almond based. However your description of them sounds wonderful and I'm going to try my hand at making them soon. (One appalling time, I encountered a recycled fruit cake mix inside, may their black hearts perish.) I agree the simply-sugary ones are horribly bland.

I have never seen pink icing on them in Aotearoa, only dark brown and white.I served in a cake shop as a school holiday job in the 1950s, and theirs were little lemony-centred ones. The 'original' recipe (havent made them yet) must be wonderfully fragrant and taste of almonds and butter and eggs. The modern commercial version is just sweet, with no particular identifying flavours.
