Maybe when I did it many years ago, I was comparing treacle with blackstrap molasses???
Anyhow, the comment must still stand - an English lass must use treacle, not molasses, or risk being seen as unpatriotic.
Fay - I intended to make parkin for work colleagues this Nov 5, but suddenly it was Nov 7 .... It should work well enough, though the texture of molasses is not quite as thick as that of black treacle. Incidentally OF - and I have just done a taste test on both substances to confirm this - molasses is quite a bit less bitter than T & L's black treacle, which incidentally, is available in the US through Amazon.com from several dealers - $4.99 to $5.99 per 454 gr can. Also other sources.

I have used molasses to make brandy snaps quite successfully.Lapinbizarrehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07686990585795363001noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24170237.post-24818406073429667172010-11-06T08:00:05.755+10:002010-11-06T08:00:05.755+10:00My pleasure, Le Loup. Can I send you some? [it is available here in Oz]
Some early recipes actually do specify "not molasses". Molasses is too bitter [and, of course, too "American" :)]
The other alternative is to use part molasses and part "Golden Syrup" [but I am not sure if it is available "over there" either?]
Seriously, parkin wont be awful if you use molasses. But molasses tarts would definitely not do.The Old Foodiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00766403052971301718noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24170237.post-35075637467499299672010-11-06T01:42:56.421+10:002010-11-06T01:42:56.421+10:00"Not molasses please"??????

I was under the impression that if Bonfire Night is a shadow of its former self (which is doubtful, considering how much noise it still makes) it's mostly because of the rise and rise of Halloween, and Trick & Treating supplanting Penny for the Guy.Sharonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05651973319804848661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24170237.post-85701759215582909362010-11-05T07:43:58.256+10:002010-11-05T07:43:58.256+10:00Ah, memories, thank you.
